Arts Ball 2012

Promotional Campaign Commences

The Promotional campaign for Arts Ball 2012 began today. The Facebook event for the ball was made and has seen people quick to join the event. Students will come back on monday for the new term and will be greeted by the wonderful sight of the lovely poster for Arts Ball 2012, designed by Susanne Keeler. The ball istself will take place on February 15th in the Salthill Hotel and tickets will go on sale September 23rd.

Annual Conference Planning Meeting

TCD, Dublin 11/02/12

Beidh ár gcruinniú roimh an chomhdháil bhliantúil ar siúl i gColáiste na Trionóide Dé Sathairn 11ú Feabhra 2012.

Annual Conference planning meeting to take place in TCD on the afternoon of Saturday 11/02/12. Every history student group is expected to send one or more representatives to the meeting. Affiliation fees should be paid after the meeting.

The meeting for Saturday 11 February has been booked for 2pm in Room A6009, Level 6, Arts Building TCD. For those who don't know where the room is, members of NUIG Cumann Staire will meet up inside the Front gate of Trinity, College Green at 1.40pm. If any of you gets lost or find yourself running late you can contact Deirdre McMahon, mobile number 087 9972692.

Arts Ball 2012

Fund-Raising Aims Set

3 months to the day to the Arts Ball, Cumann Staire has set itself the ambitious target of raising over €11,000 for charity. This will be attempted to be raised through ticket sales and a raffle to be held at the ball itself. The chosen charities for this years ball are The Williams Syndrome Association of Ireland and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland The Facebook event for the Arts Ball 2012 and website are to be launche in early January.

Cóisir Na Nollaig

The Salthouse, Friday December 2nd

Cumann Staire will once again be having its Christmas party in accordance with traditons. It will once again be taking place in the Salthouse on Friday the 2nd of December. The event will be a multi-soc event, so there will be plenty of people and plenty of craic to be had. Eastside Community Heritage

Trainee Positions Available


Trainee Positions - nine months full time, starting January 2012

Closing date: 12 noon on Wednesday 30th November 2011.

Eastside Community Heritage is an organisation that collects and archives local history. It has a large archive of over 1700 hours of oral history and thousands of photographs.

We are seeking to recruit four trainees to develop skills to work in the cultural and heritage industries as Oral Historians. The successful trainees will receive a 10,000 Pounds training bursary and NVQ Level 3 in oral history training.

The project is an exciting three year oral history and digitization training project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through their skills for the future funding programme. The project will train a total of 12 beneficiaries in skills which will equip them to work in the heritage sector and on heritage and community outreach projects.

IHSA Conference, NUI Galway 2012

Date for conference Set

An Cumann Staire and the School of History at NUI Galway are delighted to announce that the 2012 Irish History Students Association (IHSA) Annual Conference will be held at NUI Galway from Friday March 2nd 2012- Sunday March 4th 2012.

This years conference will be looking for paper submissions from both undergraduate and postgraduate students on any historical topic or period. Papers may be submitted and presented in Irish or English.

The call for papers will be officially opened on the 15th January 2012. A 200 word abstract and short bio (100 words) will be required.

Clíona Ní Chatháin, John Devlin and Hanne-Mette Alsos Raae appeared in the Irish Independent after they attended a corpoorate hospitality event on behalf of Cumann Staire. The event took place in the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill and was sponsored by the Irish Independent. The newspaper was unfortunately only able manage to spell John's name correctly, as you can be seen in the picture. Also pictured is Phillip Wharton of the Irish Independent.

Trips 2011/12

Belfast Weekend Planned

An Cumann Staire will be going to Ireland's second city: Belfast once again. The trip will take place from Friday the 25th to Sunday the 27th. All Cumann Staire members are entitled to go, though there will be a limited amount of places available. Details will be posted to the Turais section when announced. The trip is expected to cost around 20 to 30 Euro for accommodation and Travel.

Screenings 2011/12

An Cumann Staire will begin showing screenings of films and televisions series this year based on historical events. These screenings will take place in the weeks in which there will not be a talk given. Novelties and refreshments will be available for each screening. The first of these screenings will be HBO's "Band of Brothers".

Talks 2011/12

Lectures to be Recorded

In a new departure for the Cumann Staire, the society recorded her first Lecture on Wednesday 21st September. Dr. Jonathan Lewy who came from all the way from Jerusalem had the honour and it could be the first of many to be recorded with the trusty Socs Video Camera. The footage will be used for archival purposes and may also appear on our website.

Arts Ball 2012

Venue and Date Confirmed

An Cumann Staire today announced the date for the Arts Ball 2012: Wednesday 15th February 2012. The Ball will also once again be held in the Salthill Hotel, the only venue capable of holding an event the size of the Arts Ball. The Arts Ball has always been traditionaly held on the 3rd week of February each year. The Arts Ball was last year held in the Salthill Hotel with over 1,700 attending. Arts Ball 2012 is likely to see a reduction in numbers and more craic for all. Clíona Ní Chatháin and John Devlin are the co-organisers of the Arts Ball 2012, who were elected at the 2011 end-of-year AGM.

Socs Day 2011!

375 New Members

The Bailey Alan Hall was host to Socs Day once again as Cumann Staire recruited new members for the upcoming year! 375 Lucky Students signed up to join Cumann Staire and members old and new turned up to our welcome party later in the evening for the official commencement of the Cumann Staire's events and share a few glasses of wine.

New Website Launched

An Cumann Staire today has launched an updated website with a new layout, though all the information is sill easily accesible. Some new features will be added and some designs changes in an effort to improve on Tonaí Ó Roduibh's stirling work in designing the website and the maintenance of it. He passed on these responsibilities to Christopher O'Boyce. An all new landing page has been added to improve the website and a new navigation menu to enable easier access to all the areas of the website. On the main pages there is a normal index menu and a sidebar helps to make navigation within sections such as 'Nuacht' and 'Imeachtai' easy, being able to view past events, committees and trips of the Cumann Staire. The Website will be continuosly updated and be under development throughout the year.The older design and pages have been stored within the online archival resource 'Cartlann'.

ISHA Bucharest

Joe Regan to attend

Joe Regan, the Auditor-Elect will be attending the ISHA Bucharest seminar on Cumann Staire's behalf. The conference will take place from the 4th of July to the 8th. The seminar's theme will be "Myths, Heroes and Identities" and there are 60 history enthusiasts scheduled to attend. This will be the second ISHA event attended this year by Cumann Staire members, following on from the annual conference in Pula, Croatia.

Website Changes

cumannstaire.com to be updated

An Cumann Staire today announced that the society's website will undergo a regeneration process. Some new features will be added and some designs changes in an effort to improve on Tonaí Ó Roduibh's stirling work in designing the website and the maintenance of it. Trip to Estonia Finalised

An Cumann Staire has finalised details for the Trip to Tallinn and Tartu. Talinn is the largest city in Estonia ans is this year's European capital of culture. The trip to Estonia will be 5 days long from May 21st to 26th. The Cumannn Staire will take a bus with citylink from Galway and will fly out from Dublin Airport. Those who have signed-up to go on the trip are: Joe, Nóra, Julia, Séagh, Skelly, Hanne-Mette, Michael, Órfhlaith, Christina and John

ISHA Conference Pula Details Finalised

All Participants Confirmed

An Cumann Staire has finalised arrangements for the annual ISHA Conference to Pula, Croatia. The conference to Estonia will be 7 days long from May 25th April to 1rd May. The Cumann Staire delegation due to pricing and flight irregularities will be attending from the 26th onwards and will be leaving on the April 3rd. The Cumannn Staire will take a bus with citylink from Galway and will fly out from Dublin Airport and take a connecting flight from Stansted Airport in Essex. Cumann Staire will take participate in the Workshops which will focus on the East-West divide in Europe. Cumann Staire will be attending an ISHA event for the first time in almost 2 years. Nóra Ná Dhomhnaill, The outgoing Reachtaire has said she is delighted in the reforging of ISHA-CS bonds again after a lapse of time. Nóra herself was at the last ISHA event that CS participated in amongst other ones. Those who have signed-up to go on the trip are: Hanne-Mette, Christina and John

NUIG Socs Awards 2011

Great night had & Awards won

The Annual NUIG Socs Ball Awards were held for the first time in the Bailey Allen Hall on Thursday 21st April. An enjoyable night was had and the festivities went on long into the night. Congratulations must be given to Nóra and Séagh for their awards in their final year on committee. Nóra Ní Dhomhnaill won "Events Guru" for her legendary ball organising skills over the years and Séagh MacSiúrdain won the "You Light up My Life" Award for all his society effort in working with lighting for Cumann Staire and DramSoc amongst others. IHSA Conference, Cork

Galway to host conference in 2012

A delegation which consisted of: Michael McNally, Christina Folsom, Joe Regan, John Devlin, Hanne-Mette Alsos Raae and Karin Steinruecke attended the conference in Cork. The event was very well organised in the picturesque ground of University College Cork. Hanne-Mette and Joe both gave papers which were well recieved. At the IHSA AGM it was overwhelmingly decided that Cumann Staire, NUIG should host the annual IHSA conference in 2012. Joe Regan said that this was a reflection of the high standing in which history in NUIG and Cuman Staire are held. This should prove to be a difficult task, but one that Cumann Staire should have no problem rising to.
