The Comhdháil Earraigh 2009 Spring Conference will take place in the Cistercian Abbey of Ros Cré and this year's theme focuses on the early Christian era here when native Irish beliefs still had much influence. This year sees another fine collection of speakers on topics as diverse as What difference did Christanity make?, by An tOllamh Dáibhí Ó Cróinín to The archaeological evidence for the transition by Prof. Etienne Rynne. Accommodation and meals are included in the conference fee.

ISHA Zagreb is pleased to host the 2009 annual conference, to be held in April 2009. The conference will take place in the year of a double jubilee - 20 years since ISHA was originally founded in Budapest and 15 years since Zagreb joined her ranks. The 2009 Annual Conference will be held on the Central Campus at the University of Warwick, England. The conference will be co-located with that of the Social History Society. The Economic History Society, of Britain, exists to support reseach and teaching in economic and social history, broadly defined. It does this through publications, including the Economic History Review and a range of textbooks and study packs, through conferences and workshops, through the finance of research fellowships and research grants, and through bursaries and prizes for younger scholars.

Comhdháil Bhliantúil CCS - IHSA Annual Conference

The Comhaltas na gCumann Staire / Irish History Students' Association was founded in 1950 and comprises student history societies from all over Ireland. The CCS/IHSA organises an annual conference which is usually hosted in rotation by the country's third level institutions. Last year the Cumann Staire had the honour to host a very successful CCS/IHSA conference in conjunction with our annual Aistir conference. Abstracts need to be submitted by Friday 16/01/09 to the email address below. These should not exceed 250 words in length and are welcome from both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Papers are to be twenty minutes long and should be no longer than 2500-3000 words. The Cumann Staire will be sending a group to the conference.

Irish Socialist Lives

The manifest deficiencies of the economic system that has dominated the world in recent decades make this the opportune time to consider alternatives. One place to start would be with an examination of the unconventional ideas espoused by radical Irish men and women of the past? An Irish Socialist Lives' symposium offers an opportunity to do just that. Contributors, including leading historians, will describe the lives and consider the ideas of syndicalists, social democrats, trade unionists, agrarian radicals, Christian Socialists, Marxists, socialist republicans, Chartists, Anarchists and co-operators who worked in Ireland during the past few centuries. Some, like James Larkin, were world-famous; others, like Mary Galway the leader of the Belfast millworkers, had some prominence; others still, like the Árainn-born writer and founder of American Trotskyism, Tomás Ó Flatharta, laboured in relative obscurity.

Paramilitary Violence after the First World War, 1918-1923:
Towards a Global Perspective

The conference will explore the often neglected history of paramilitary violence after the Great War from an international comparative perspective. Violent conflicts erupted across Europe and further afield between 1917/18 and 1923, most notably, but by no means exclusively, in Russia, Finland, the new Baltic states, Ireland, Central Europe, Northern Italy, Anatolia and the Caucasus.
By focussing on both geographical ‘zones’ and also cultures of paramilitary violence, the project aims to achieve the following objectives:

1. overcome a nation-centric approach to paramilitary violence by investigating the trans-national ramifications of the Great War in the short-term aftermath of the conflict (1918-1924)
2. place the Irish War of Independence and Civil War in an international context of paramilitary violence
3. explore the forms, cultures and patterns of emerging paramilitary violence in order to ascertain the similarities, differences and connections between the different cases
4. explain why some countries managed the transition from war (1914-18) to peace more successfully than others and why other regions and countries experienced major waves of violence.
