ISHA Zagreb is pleased to host the 2009 annual conference, to be held in april next year. The conference will take place in the year of a double jubilee - 20 years since ISHA was originally founded in Budapest and 15 years since Zagreb joined her ranks. The 2009 Annual Conference will be held on the Central Campus at the University of Warwick, England. The conference will be co-located with that of the Social History Society. The Economic History Society, of Britain, exists to support reseach and teaching in economic and social history, broadly defined. It does this through publications, including the Economic History Review and a range of textbooks and study packs, through conferences and workshops, through the finance of research fellowships and research grants, and through bursaries and prizes for younger scholars.

The conference will explore the often neglected history of paramilitary violence after the Great War from an international comparative perspective. Violent conflicts erupted across Europe and further afield between 1917/18 and 1923, most notably, but by no means exclusively, in Russia, Finland, the new Baltic states, Ireland, Central Europe, Northern Italy, Anatolia and the Caucasus.
By focussing on both geographical ‘zones’ and also cultures of paramilitary violence, the project aims to achieve the following objectives:

1. overcome a nation-centric approach to paramilitary violence by investigating the trans-national ramifications of the Great War in the short-term aftermath of the conflict (1918-1924)
2. place the Irish War of Independence and Civil War in an international context of paramilitary violence
3. explore the forms, cultures and patterns of emerging paramilitary violence in order to ascertain the similarities, differences and connections between the different cases
4. explain why some countries managed the transition from war (1914-18) to peace more successfully than others and why other regions and countries experienced major waves of violence.
