Comhaltas na gCumann Staire

Irish History Students' Association

The Inaugural Congress of the Irish Inter-Varsity History Students took place at Newman House, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, on 17 February 1950. F.X. Martin (UCD), Laird Taylor (TCD), Cecil Smith (QUB), Niall Delargy (UCG-NUIG) and Con O'Leary (UCC) were instrumental in organising the first annual congress. From the start the objectives of the Association were threefold: to provide a forum for exchange of views on historical matters between members of the affiliated history societies; to hold an annual conference hosted by one or more of the constituent history societies; and to publish the proceedings of each conference. The IHSA has performed an invaluable role in providing students with an opportunity to develop their interest in history in an enjoyable atmosphere and in promoting friendships between students of history from universities and colleges throughout Ireland since 1950.

The Cumann Staire has, since the attendence of Niall Delargy, been an active member group of the CCS/IHSA and continues to send students to the annual conferences who wish to present papers, act as delegates or simply enjoy the event. Papers can be presented by undergrad or postgrad students and are normally of a 15 minute length. Those presenting papers on behalf of the Cumann Staire will have their transport and accommodation costs covered, subject to approval by the Coiste. A copy of the presented paper must be submitted to the Cumann Staire and due reference to our support should be acknowledged in the conference presentation.

The 2009 conference was hosted by NUIM and took place on Márta 6-7 March 2009 in Má Nuad (NUIM).
Three speakers presented on behalf of the Cumann Staire at the conference: Tonaí Ó Roduibh (IRCHSS Scholar); Mark Phelan (IRCHSS Scholar); Andrew Sargent (IRCHSS Scholar). Also travelling: An tOllamh Steven Ellis; Séan Ó Duibhir; David Scallan. Here is the finalised conference timetable.

The 2010 conference will be jointly hosted by TCD and UCD in Baile Átha Cliath in commemoration of their hosting of the first conference in 1950.
