Cumann Staire is going to… Portugal
So we have come to the end of the year. But there will be one more Cumann Staire event, the International Trip. This year we will be visting Porto & Lisbon in Portugal. Last year we travelled to Tallinn in Estonia for a great trip and this one promises to be just as good.
Both cities have been listed in the top 10 places to visit in Europe for 2012.
The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it’s an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century Sao Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia. Lisbon can be summed up in one word: variety.
From the 12th-century Se cathedral to the modern bridges spanning the Tagus River, from the 18th-century Aguas Livres aqueduct to the futuristic Oriental Station, Lisbon traverses the ages. The city’s many neighborhoods include Moorish Alfama, home of the city’s tallest hill, and 17th-century Bairro Alto, with its hopping nightlife. Museums, castles, open-air markets, funiculars, Fado music – Lisbon’s pleasures include these and much more.
